Select Team Program (U9-U14)

Select Team Coaches Selection (Red & Black / U9 – U12)

  • Any adult who has an eligible player may apply to become a coach unless an exception is granted by the Coaches Selection Committee.
  • A committee composed of CBA Board Members, put together by the Select Team Director, will interview each candidate.
  • Once selected and approved by the Coaches Selection Committee, CBA Board will approve the selections.
  • Once selected, coaches will remain in their positions for the fall and spring season.
  • All coaches who have opposition (by another candidate) must participate in the interview process.
  • Coaches who have been a Select Team coach and “run unopposed” for a select team coach’s position must still be approved by the Coaches Selection Committee and CBA Board for the upcoming fall and spring seasons.
  • Coach’s son/daughter automatically makes the team. The coach will determine if he wants him/her at the tryouts.

Formation of CBA Select Teams (Red & Black / U9 – U12)

  • The first team will be called Cowboys-Red and will be comprised of 10-12 players in each age group.
  • The second team will be Cowboys-Black and will be comprised of 10-12 players in each age group.
  • The first team (Red) will play at a level no lower than Classic or Major in the North Texas Interlock league and will play at a Major/AAA (USSA), D1 or D2 (Triple Crown) or National/American (Super Series) level for tournaments.
  • The second team (Black) will play at a level determined by the Select Team Director.
  • If a team wants to play in a tournament that is lower than their designation, they must get approval by the Select Team director.
  • Together the Red and Black Select teams will hold a tryout for all positions prior to each season (approximately August for fall and November for spring).
  • The select team coaches pick the team.
  • Each select team tryout requires an “independent evaluator” selected by CBA who will have no affiliations or connections to the specific age group.
  • Both Select Team coaches (Red & Black) must attend all tryout dates (including private sessions if required due to schedule conflicts).
  • Independent evaluators for a particular age group must attend all tryout dates (including private sessions if required due to schedule conflicts).
  • No parental involvement in any portion of the select team tryout process (even if they are a CBA Board Member).
  • To be eligible for either the Select Red or Black Team, all players must try out.
  • If a player cannot be at the predetermined tryout dates, the coaches (including evaluator) may have a private session for that player.
  • If a player is not available during the entire tryout timeframe, CBA Board must grant an exception before the player can be considered eligible for a team.
  • All Coach and independent evaluator notes/rankings will be kept on file (confidentially) at the CBA office.
  • Players will be selected based upon ability, attitude, baseball knowledge, etc.
  • Player selection process will be as objective as possible.
  • Roster sizes are up to the coaches, but it is mandatory that each team carry 10-12 players.
  • The Red team is selected first. Only players who tried out and did not make the Red team will be eligible for the Black team selection process.
  • Any incumbent player bumped from a team (Red to Black, Black to neither team, etc.) must receive a call from the Select Team coach at the time of the team posting.

CBA Select Team Player Eligibility (Red & Black / U9 - U12)

  • Roster is subject to the 80/20 rule.  A minimum of 80% of the players must be from Coppell.  A maximum of 20% of the players can be from outside Coppell.  The intention of the CBA Select team program is to maximize the number of Coppell kids on the roster.  All players from outside Coppell must attend the tryouts prior to each season.  Exceptions must be presented to and approved by the CBA Select Team committee.
